Suicide researchers wonder if it's even worth going ahead with more studies

March 6, 2008 | Issue 5-10

BOSTON – A group of scientists researching the causes and effects of teen suicide wondered this week if continuing their experimentation and data collection was even worth it anymore. “Sometimes I feel pretty good about the research, but other times I just feel like it’s too much to deal with and I just want out,” said research team leader Gary Olsteen. Other researchers report feeling as if they are experimenting in total isolation from their data and are unable to bridge the bottomless correlation gap. A particular event involving missing data led many of the scientists to feel a deep, numerical void that left many believing they could not go on with the study another moment. Though several of the team members have searched for answers online or reached out to close friends, still others seem unwilling to fight the perpetual feeling that no one cares about their research and they won’t be missed anyway if they just give up.
