HOPKINS, Minn. – A 22-year-old man caused a multiple-letter pileup yesterday afternoon after attempting to drive his car while sending a text message.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a major text message accident just before 4 p.m. Monday. Jeff Guinn, of Hopkins, was attempting to operate an automobile while sending a text message to his girlfriend and caused a massive collision of 15 illogically-placed letters. Authorities believe Guinn lost control of the text after looking away from his phone to concentrate on distracting driving activity.

"This type of thing happens too frequently anymore," said Hopkins Police Chief Craig Moore. "If you look away even for a few seconds it could lead to a very serious typo.”

Guinn, who emergency workers said was “irresponsibly operating a car while risking senseless harm to trivial communication,” was treated at the scene for minor corrections.

Those who responded to the accident report a grisly site. “It looked like he had been trying to ask what his girlfriend wanted to do for dinner,” said police officer Hank Kinsey. “But it appears [Guinn] took his eyes off the screen and ‘dmr  tsognddftucs’ was the result.”

Crews worked quickly to clear the mishap, and both t9 and Abc lanes of communication were reopened within the hour.

Driving was blamed for more than 5,000 text message accidents in 2007.
