March 20, 2008 | Issue 5-12

CENTRALIA, Ill. – Area farmer Bill Hutchins announced intentions today to cultivate ‘round about 35 acre of corn in that there field just on down the way in the holler. Although Hutchins briefly considered planting corn in the field just a skinned knee past the Smithton place, the 64-year-old agriculturist instead opted for the ground over yonder just before the bottoms, citing its fresh-for-the-pickin’ soil. Hutchins, who reckons he ought start seedin’ the plot soon as she firms up a bit, is pleased he will be able to see the corn’s progress from his homestead. “With the corn planted just yea far before the old schoolhouse and only a stone’s throw from the old pigpen I can watch it grow as high as an elephant’s eye.”
